Energy Efficiency and Thermal Comfort in Buildings: Challenges, Barriers & Way Forward
Pakistan is a developing country that is facing a number of challenges in the energy sector, including issues related to energy efficiency. The energy demand is increasing at a high pace, while the existing energy conservation policy does not address the real problem (i.e., consumption in the household sector). The energy is used in an inefficient way, and the electricity is mainly produced using imported fossil fuels.
Thermal comfort is a crucial aspect of indoor environments in Pakistan, particularly during the hot and humid summer months. The climate varies across the country, from the sea (in the south), to the plains (in the centre) and mountains (in the north). The buildings are designed using typical construction techniques and materials without considering orientation, shading, insulation, ventilation, and energy consumption. Moreover, active systems are commonly used for heating and cooling.
Overall, ensuring energy efficiency and thermal comfort in Pakistan requires a multi-faceted approach that takes into account factors such as building design, energy efficiency, construction materials and practices, and sociocultural considerations. In my past lecture, I shared my experience and knowledge on this topic. The details are mentioned below:
Topic: Energy Efficiency and Thermal Comfort in Buildings: Challenges, Barriers and Way Forward
Day: Wednesday, 1st March 2023
Time: 03:00 PM (GMT+5)
Venue: Seminar Hall, Department of Architecture, Comsats University Islamabad (CUI), Lahore Campus.
Topic:
Urban Regeneration and Adaptive Reuse: Understanding through Case Studies
Urban regeneration (often called urban renewal) brings back underutilized assets and redistributes opportunities, increasing urban prosperity and quality of life. Urban regeneration initiatives are complex, lengthy, and they run the risk of gentrifying private spaces or privatising public ones.
The meaning of adaptive reuse is the renovation and reuse of pre-existing structures (such as buildings, warehouses, etc.) for new purposes.
Both of these processes are essential for the sustainable development of cities and neighbourhoods. In my past lecture, I gave a talk on "Urban Regeneration and Adaptive Reuse: Understanding through Case Studies", as per the following schedule.
Day: Wednesday, 1st March 2023
Time: 11:00 AM (GMT+5)
Venue: University of Management and Technology (UMT), Lahore, Pakistan
Topic:
Climate change, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency: Meeting the challenges of cities in the 21st century
Conference Title: Saving our Cities: Looming Challenges and Data-Driven Policy-Making
Dates: June 17-18, 2022
Venue: Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore, Pakistan
Scientific evidence for the warming of the climate system is unequivocal. We witness climate change through Global temperature rise, ocean warming, decreased snow cover, extreme weather events, ocean acidification, rising sea levels etc. Climate is turning cities into ovens. Cities are heating up; we should prepare ourselves and learn how to keep them cool?
Last month, I presented my work on "Climate change, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency: Meeting the challenges of cities in the 21st century" during a conference at LUMS, Lahore, Pakistan. Proving adequate thermal conditions in buildings and built environments is essential for human health and well-being. By using scientific knowledge and methods, we can improve the thermal performance of buildings while using less energy for heating and cooling.

How to Write an Undergraduate Thesis
February 2022
Department of Architecture Design,
NFC Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET), Multan, Pakistan
Writing an undergraduate thesis in architecture is an important milestone for a student. Architecture undergraduate program in Pakistan and several other countries still comprises of five years. The students are required to write a thesis during their 9th semester (5th year) and in the 10th semester, they need to design the project based on the findings made in their thesis.
Several students fail to write a comprehensive, concise thesis report which creates problems during the design phase. My tomorrow's lecture focuses on writing an undergraduate thesis mainly focusing on architecture studies.
